Time Out magazine lists Cutting Room Square in Ancoats (home to our head office) as one of the coolest streets in the world. And we couldn’t agree more.
Cutting Room Square in Ancoats was recently named one of the 33 Coolest Streets in the World by Time Out magazine. With our UK head office looking out onto the Square, we’re very familiar with its stellar restaurants, cafes and bars, its rich history, and its vibrant culture of creatives—all of which helped secure the street its place in the rankings.
Time Out asked more than 20,000 city dwellers around the world one question: what is the coolest street in your city? This list, compiled by the locals of the world, was narrowed down by the magazine’s editors and experts to the very coolest streets on the planet.
Cutting Room Square in Ancoats ranked above renowned streets in Sydney, Tokyo, New York, and Singapore.
Neighbourhoods in Copenhagen, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Berlin, Miami, Athens, San Francisco, Lisbon, Dublin, and Dubai also landed a feature.
The rise of modern-day Ancoats
Time Out hailed Cutting Room Square for “bring[ing] together Manchester’s proud industrial heritage with all of the advantages of a forward-looking city”.
Ancoats thrived in the industrial era and is considered to have been the world’s first industrial suburb. However, the slump in the cotton industry in the 1930s saw many of Manchester’s mills fall into disrepair.
By the end of the 20th century, around 80% of business floor space in Ancoats was empty, and much of the area was in a state of decay. It was only around 20 years ago that a remarkable transformation began.
Regeneration projects and new urban developments have reshaped Ancoats into what it is today: one of the city’s coolest and most sought-after neighbourhoods.
Cutting Room Square attracts visitors with its open-air dining space, which has a real Mediterranean feel. From Italian stone-baked pizza at Rudy’s, to authentic Tapas dishes at Canto, the street boasts an eclectic mix of restaurants attracting foodies near and far.
And let’s not forget mana—the only Michelin-star restaurant in Greater Manchester.
Time Out also praised Hallé St Peters, and rightly so. The concerts of Hallé Orchestra, held at this stunning former church, are nothing short of breath-taking.
It comes as no surprise to us that Cutting Room Square made Time Out’s list. We’re incredibly proud to be based in one of the Coolest Streets in the World.
The property market in Manchester is thriving, and we have our hand in a number of exciting developments around the city. Meadowside is a £235m residential development overlooking one of the only green spaces in Manchester city centre, whilst Cheltenham Place offers luxury studio apartments next to the University Campus.
