Siem Reap, in the heart of Cambodia, has always been at the forefront when it comes to accommodating the global travel community. Now, with the opening of the new Siem Reap Angkor International Airport, the region is all set to take another giant leap into the future of air travel, welcoming more visitors than ever before.
Located 51 kilometres southeast of downtown Siem Reap, the new airport is a significant upgrade from the previous Siem Reap Airport. It’s strategically positioned to accommodate the growing demands of international tourism, while also reducing congestion in the city centre.
The new Angkor International Airport, which has been under construction for several years, is almost ready to welcome passengers, with its construction reaching 90% completion, as reported by Khmer Times.
State-Of-The-Art Facilities
The airport boasts state-of-the-art technology and infrastructure, designed to provide an efficient and enjoyable travel experience. Its capacity is a testament to the ambitious plans that Cambodian authorities have for the tourism industry. The airport can accommodate up to 10 million passengers annually, which is a considerable upturn from the previous airport’s capacity. This increase is a clear indication of Cambodia’s intention to attract more international visitors and establish Siem Reap as a leading tourism destination in Southeast Asia.
According to the Centre for Aviation, the new Angkor International Airport has a 4E standard runway, which can accommodate large, long-haul aircraft. This means that Siem Reap can now welcome direct flights from major cities worldwide, reducing the need for tourists to transit through other airports and making the city more accessible to global visitors.

In line with the opening of the new airport, the old Siem Reap Airport will cease its operations, according to the Phnom Penh Post. The closure of the old airport is a strategic move to divert all traffic to the new facility, ensuring that it operates at maximum efficiency. While the old airport served the city well, the new Angkor International Airport promises to bring in a new era of tourism and economic growth for Siem Reap and Cambodia as a whole.
Furthermore, the new airport’s location is more favourable in terms of environmental considerations. The old airport was located relatively close to the Angkor Wat temple complex, and there were ongoing concerns about the impact of noise pollution on the UNESCO World Heritage site. The new airport, located further away, will help mitigate these issues and offer a more sustainable solution to accommodate the city’s growing tourism industry.
A New Era of Tourism
The opening of the new Angkor International Airport is not just a milestone for Siem Reap but for Cambodia as a whole. The improved infrastructure, increased capacity, and enhanced accessibility will undoubtedly foster more international collaborations and contribute to the country’s economic growth.
It seems that the city is ready to embrace the world with open arms, promising a seamless and enriched travel experience. With its new airport, Siem Reap is undoubtedly on course to become an even more attractive destination on the global tourism map.
