Established in 2014, Time Out Market Lisbon was the first venue of the now-global hospitality brand. It is located in Mercado da Ribeira in Cais do Sodré, Lisbon, and today, travellers come from far and wide to experience “the best of the city under one roof”.

If you’ve never visited one of Time Out’s famous indoor food markets, you might be wondering what all the hype is about. You’ll find these renowned venues in major foodie cities around the world—from Lisbon and Dubai to Montreal, Miami, New York, Boston, and Chicago.

Time Out Magazine says,

It is the world’s first editorially curated food and cultural market, bringing the Time Out brand to life with the best local food and drinks complemented by cultural activities – from cooking classes with top chefs to art from local talent and live entertainment.

Lisbon’s Time Out Market is more than just a food hall. It is a landmark in Lisbon which brings together international cuisines and cultures, with more than 40 vendors inside one 5,000-square-metre restaurant space.

Each food and drink trader has been chosen, tasted, and tested by Time Out’s own journalists and critics—and boasts no less than four or five stars. Better still, some of the world’s best chefs have cooked in Time Out’s kitchens, offering visitors a once-in-a-lifetime culinary experience.

On our trip to Time Out Market, we were greeted by a bustling atmosphere and the delicious smells of various cuisines from around the world. Restaurants and bars line the perimeter of the hall, while the centre is dedicated to seating areas and bar tables.

The market was bustling, as you would expect, with people perusing menus, forming queues, and tucking into their chosen delights. There’s a great viewing platform overlooking the hall where you can watch the Lisboa Market in action and catch a glimpse of the recognisable Time Out sign hanging overhead.

From traditional Portuguese food to global delicacies, patrons are certainly spoilt for choice. Everywhere you look, food is being prepared in a quick and careful fashion. Liberta Pastabar is crafting delicious vegetarian dishes, Chef Marlene Vieira is cooking up her revered rice duck broth, and Asian Lab is putting its unique spin on Korean Burgers, served on Chinese bread with kimchi mayo.

Give Alentejo soul food a try at O’Frade—you won’t regret it—or sample traditional Bacalhau delicacies at Croqueteria, Lisbon’s first (and only) croquette store.

If you’re in the mood for something sweet, head to Davvero for the best artisanal pistachio ice cream you’ve ever tasted. The one and only Manteigaria is also a popular vendor, where perfect pastéis de nata are being crafted by hand and sold for only one euro.

Wine lovers also have a lot to look forward to at Time Out Market Lisbon. Garrafeira Nacional offers a wide range of authentic local wines, and at Taylor’s, you can sample port wine from one of the world’s oldest port brands. There are also additional bars offering cocktails, beer, spirits and Licor Beirão, a famous liquor in Portugal.

At Time Out Market Lisboa, the real challenge is choosing what to try—and what to sacrifice because you can’t eat any more! But don’t worry, as this leaves you with all the more reason to return.

Eight new markets are set to open in other world cities by 2027 as Time Out drives its expansion forward. This year, Porto and Cape Town will welcome their own venue, followed by Barcelona and Vancouver in 2024—and Abu Dhabi, Prague, Osaka, and Riyadh thereafter.

Keep an eye out for specific opening dates. Until then, we strongly recommend a trip to Time Out Market in Lisbon, or any of its other venues, for five-star food and a fantastic cultural experience.
