The Bodrum Peninsula is fast becoming one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe, and it is not hard to see why. From the picturesque cities to the beautiful coastal towns, this area has a lot to offer. And when it comes to food, there are plenty of experiences here not to be missed.

If you are heading out this summer, here are a few dining experiences you might want to try.

Meyhane Restaurants

Want to eat like a local? Head to one of the Meyhanes in the city. These offer a collection of hot and cold starters, but the experience gets special when you come to the main course. Go to the fish market or butchers next door and select what you want to eat. They will then take it to your favourite restaurant, where they will cook it for you on the spot. Dishes include seafood such as grilled octopus, but it is the lively and buzzing atmosphere that will live long in your memory.

The town of Bodrum

The centrepiece of the Bodrum peninsula is the town itself. It offers everything you would expect from a vibrant and modern city with a collection of restaurants, bars and cafes. The selection of cuisine is wide with everything from Turkish to Chinese, Mexican, Thai and much more. It makes for a pleasant evening in a charming and cosmopolitan environment.

Seafood

Due to its location, the Bodrum Peninsular is famous for one thing more than anything else – its seafood. For the best experience, try to visit some coastal villages away from Bodrum town. Here you can experience some exquisite and authentic Turkish dishes in a lovely and relaxed setting, a world away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

For a luxurious experience, you might want to try the beautiful village of Goltürkbükü, which has become popular among Bodrum’s wealthier visitors. Here you can find a collection of incredible restaurants that spill almost directly into the Aegean Sea.

And one of the best seafood restaurants for seafood is Miam Restoran. Located on the waterfront of Turkbuku, it gives you a great view of the marina, where you can choose what you want from a fresh, made-to-order seafood bar.

Street food

For a quicker and cheaper snack, you can try street food in Bodrum. There are plenty of choices here, especially at the Friday market. Offerings depend on what is in the season, but you can often find fresh figs, pomegranates, peaches and more.

And around the edge of the market, you can taste delicious quick Turkish bites, perfect if you need to eat on the go. And to really eat like a local, you can try the Turkish version of the baked potato. The Kumpirs come with all types of toppings, such as sweetcorn, olives or yoghurt.

Bodrum seafront

To soak in the atmosphere of Bodrum at night, head to the seafront. Here you can have a first-class dining experience in spectacular scenery, especially with the city lights and the castle as a background. It is a luxurious setting with the sound of the sea lapping nearby and gorgeous yachts in the harbour, which may be reflected in some price tags, but if you are planning a special night out, this could be a great option.
