According to a new report by GlobalData, France is set to become the most visited country in the world by 2025. Currently ranked second, France is expected to overtake current leader Spain by creating a more welcoming and enjoyable environment for tourists.
While the country had previously held the top spot, Spain edged ahead back in 2021, receiving 26.3 million visitors throughout the year. However, experts predict that the number of international arrivals is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 12.1% between 2022 and 2025, putting it back in front. With this, it’s expected that an estimated 93.7 million visitors will be welcomed into France by 2025.
But what is driving the shift? We explore why France is edging ahead.
An investment in infrastructure
French officials plan on implementing several strategies, such as renovating airports and train stations, enhancing security measures, and promoting France’s unique culture. One notable project is the plan to open a high-speed rail link between the UK and Bordeaux by 2026, making visiting the country’s wine region even easier for Brits.
A further key transportation addition is the Ultra Rapid Train line, which is being planned by the European Commission. This would connect Paris with different cities in France and its neighbouring countries, significantly reducing travel time. The program will involve the construction of an 8000km, high-speed rail network that will pass through France, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Estonia, Lithuania, Poland and Finland.
Promoting French culture
One cannot think of France without thinking of the finessed food, the fine wines and of course the chic fashions.
So, it’s unsurprisingly that the tourism industry is also working to promote the country’s unique culture and gastronomy through new marketing campaigns that emphasize the natural beauty of France. This includes targeting younger visitors from countries such as China, who are eager to experience the culture of the country.
The government is also working to increase the number of tourist attractions available for visitors, as well as developing a system that makes it easier for tourists to obtain visas.
Additionally, France plans on implementing campaigns designed to attract more international travellers. This includes increasing marketing efforts both online and through social media, as well as introducing new incentive programs to encourage more people to visit the country.
France has very much begun to embrace digital strategies in order to promote the culture that the world loves. One campaign has included the free Destinations Vins de Provence app, available on IOS and Android, that helps visitors see what wineries are offering in real-time.
Ultimately, it’s expected that this combination of strategies will be successful in helping France reclaim its title as the most visited country in the world. With the right plans and investments in place, it looks like the country is set to become a tourist destination that can’t be beaten.
