Bangkok boasts a fantastic restaurant scene—renowned not only for its traditional Thai dishes but also for its diverse range of cuisine.

Chefs and restaurant owners have been keen to establish themselves in Thailand’s teeming capital, which draws in travellers and foodie fanatics from across the globe.

This year, a number of exciting new restaurants have opened in Bangkok. Here are some of the best.

Santiaga

Located next to one of the institutions on the Bangkok dining scene, La Monitor, Santiaga caters to a growing enthusiasm for Mexican cuisine. Set at the higher end of the market, it offers delights such as beef tongue on a freshly made tortilla and duck enchiladas. A traditional clay comal that travelled all the way from Oaxaca sits over the fire. It brings all the excitement of Mexico city with some rich and unforgettable flavours.

The Small Dinner Club

If you like your portions small but memorable, the Small Dinner Club will be for you. Its owner, Sareen Rojaniametin, has been through quite a journey to get here. This former photographer and director of advertising is entirely self-taught as a chef, but has worked at some of the most famous restaurants in the world.

He ran his own restaurant in Melbourne before returning to Bangkok with this unique take on Thai cuisine. Here you can expect a multi-course tasting menu which takes you on an unforgettable ride. He has only 12 seats per day, making for an extremely intimate and exclusive setting, but if you can get a table, this will be a genuinely memorable dining experience.

Frantzen

Renowned Swedish chef, Bjorn Frantzen, has finally made it to Bangkok; opening up in an outstanding pair of villas and boasting the most Nordic cuisine you’re likely to find in the entire city. Back home in Sweden he has three Michelin stars and is looking to bring that same fine dining experience to Thailand’s capital.

Set across a two-story house, he has spared no expense in the setting. A luminous pathway leads into the restaurant which consists of three private dining areas and a glass house. Here you can expect Nordic favourites including lobster, yeasted mushrooms, duck with foie grass and cauliflower chawanmushi with morels.

The second villa houses his cocktail bar (which is becoming a popular bar in itself) offering exciting drink combinations along with Swedish whisky and a selection of fine wines by the glass.

The White House

The global theme of restaurants in Bangkok continues with the White House. Run by Aleksandrs Nasikailovs, this eatery offers traditional Latvian flavours with a twist of French and Japanese traditions. There’s a Bloody Mary Kombucha that comes in an ice dome and is torched right there beside your table. Earthy duck liver is served with black mushrooms while the Gillardeau oyster with a yoghurt peal will be an acquired taste but one which will send any oyster lover home more than satisfied.

Once again the food is supplemented with unique cocktails including the remarkable-sounding blue cheese cocktail alongside Kombu-Cha Yuzu Sangria.

These a just a handful of the new must-visit restaurants to open in Bangkok this year—and we’ll no doubt see even more venues hit the restaurant scene in 2023.

With this in mind, it’s time to book that long-awaited trip to Thailand.
