We explore some of the most popular annual events in Budapest, Hungary, that keep tourists returning year after year.

F1 Hungarian Grand Prix

One of the highlights of the international motor racing calendar, the F1 Hungarian Grand Prix is held at the 4,381-kilometre Hungaroring Circuit near Budapest, where fans can watch the world’s best drivers compete. It has been part of the F1 calendar since 1986, and the challenging circuit often results in exciting races.

Sziget Festival

This is one of the largest music and cultural festivals in Europe. It takes place on Óbudai-sziget (“Old Buda Island”), a lush 108-hectare island on the Danube in Budapest. Hosting a wealth of musical genres, in 2023, headliners include the likes of Billie Eilish, David Guetta, and Florence + The Machine. Besides music, the week-long festival includes several other cultural and entertainment events, like dance performances, theatrical shows, circus acts and more.

Danube Carnival

A multicultural event hosted annually by Budapest, the Danube Carnival celebrates the Danube River as a source of cultural unity. It combines different art forms such as dance, music, and folk traditions from various countries, creating a unique ambience. It also includes the “Dancing Budapest” program, where amateur and professional dancers perform at different open-air stages across the city.

Budapest Spring Festival

The Budapest Spring Festival is one of Hungary’s most prestigious cultural festivals. It has been held annually since 1981 and lasts for about two weeks in March or April. The festival hosts a wide range of programs, including international, national, and local artists performing various genres of arts such as music, theatre, opera, and visual arts. Concerts, exhibitions, and performances take place in multiple venues, from theatres and concert halls to churches and outdoor stages. It’s an excellent opportunity to witness Budapest’s cultural richness and diversity.

Budapest Christmas Market

One cannot mention annual attractions in Budapest that keep people coming back for more without mentioning the Christmas market. Typically beginning in late November and running until the end of December, the Budapest Christmas Market transforms the city into a festive wonderland.

The most famous one is held at Vörösmarty Square, in the city’s heart. Hundreds of vendors set up stalls to sell unique handmade crafts, gifts, and traditional Hungarian Christmas food and drink. You can taste local specialities such as chimney cake (kürtőskalács), mulled wine, and goulash.

The market is not only a place for shopping but also offers a wide range of cultural programs. Visitors can enjoy live music, folk dance performances, and workshops. A huge Christmas tree and beautiful light decorations give the market a magical atmosphere. A smaller but equally enchanting market at St Stephen’s Basilica also features a unique 3D light show projected onto the basilica.
