Portugal’s government recently announced its new Digital Nomad visa option for foreigners employed by a company based outside of Portugal, and on 30 October 2022, applications opened to the world.
Changes to the Law on Foreigners have simplified visa procedures for digital nomads and researchers, who can now live and work remotely in Portugal via the country’s new employment-based visa.
(The revision of Portugal’s immigration law also streamlined visa processes for people from member states of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) and Portuguese minors.)
Prior to 30 October, remote workers could apply for a residence permit under the D7 visa. The D7 visa is designed for people able to support themselves on a passive income whilst living in Portugal. This made it the only appropriate visa for remote workers—until now.
Under the Digital Nomad visa, foreigners can apply for a short-stay permit, which lasts up to one year. This grants them the freedom to live and work in Portugal without having to make a long-term commitment straight away.
Another option is to apply for a residence permit under the Digital Nomad visa, which is better suited to those looking to permanently relocate to the country.
Digital Nomad Visa Requirements
To obtain a temporary stay visa and residence permit, remote workers will have to submit: a document certifying tax residence; average monthly income over the last 3 months of at least the equivalent of 4 minimum wages; a work contract; promise of an employment contract, and a statement from the employer proving the relationship.
In cases of independent activity, you must submit: a document proving tax residence; average monthly income in the last 3 months of a minimum value equivalent to 4 minimum wages; company contract; contract or proposal of service contract, and proof of services rendered to one or more entities.
One of the main differences between the D7 visa and Portugal’s new Digital Nomad visa concerns proof of income. Digital nomads will have to submit proof of an average monthly income earned in the last three months which is equivalent to four guaranteed minimum monthly remunerations. This equates to 2820 euros in 2022.
Visa applicants will also be required to submit documents proving fiscal residence.
