Lisbon has become a prime destination for real estate investment, attracting foreign buyers with its growing economy, thriving real estate market and booming tourism industry.

The city is considered one of the best city break destinations in Europe, attracting visitors from all corners of the globe. Data from the INE revealed that during the first five months of 2022, overnight stays increased by 355.2 per cent, and only just fell short of pre-pandemic levels.

More and more families are choosing to settle in Lisbon where they have access to endless business and employment opportunities and esteemed educational institutions.

In the second quarter of 2022, office space saw the second highest occupation in twenty years (CBRE). This was largely fuelled by relocation, with many professionals moving back to the capital post-pandemic.

As a result, Lisbon is experiencing a high demand for properties in and around the city centre.

A balance between sea and city living

Lisbon's suburbs

Interestingly—and to no surprise—an increasing number of people are succumbing to the allure of Lisbon’s suburbs. The towns on the outskirts of the capital are naturally less well known, but have a lot to offer those wishing to live slightly outside the hustle and bustle.

In the countryside, near the beach, and with the city on your doorstep, the outskirts of Lisbon offer an extremely high quality of life.

In Lisbon’s suburbs, you can find some of the most stunning beaches in the region. The towns surrounding these jaw-dropping coastlines are a hub for visitors and expats alike.

Oeiras

To the west of the capital, you can find the town of Oeiras. Quieter than the centre, yet a thriving hub for business, Oeiras is popular with families and professionals looking to settle in Lisbon. Residents can take daily seafront strolls along the town’s 4-mile long promenade, and enjoy being close to beautiful beaches like Praia da Torre.

Cascais

Slightly further west is Cascais, another well-known Lisbon suburb. Once a humming fishing port, and later the royal family’s summer retreat, Cascais is rich in history and culture. The area has a local population of over 200,000, and is also a popular coastal resort, attracting a high number of tourists each year.

Costa da Caparica

Costa da Caparica is one of the most popular seaside towns outside of Lisbon, renowned for its 30km sandy beachfront lined with restaurants, shops, and bars.

It sits 18km below Lisbon on the south bank of the Tagus river and is also a very attractive place for a first or second home.

Famous for its expansive coastline, this region south of Lisbon is also home to several nature parks and protected landscapes.

Discover the fossil-filled cliffs that lie in the nature reserve of “Arriba Fóssil” or take a stroll through the region’s vast pine forests—also home to a number of magnificent golf courses.

Properties in central Lisbon can cost up to 13,000eur per m2. In comparison, prices in Lisbon’s suburbs are much lower. Residents also benefit from a lower cost of living than in the city centre, despite being only a short car, bus, or train ride away.

Close to central Lisbon, with sweeping natural landscapes, charming seaside towns and affordable living—these areas make attractive places to live and invest. It is easy to see why so many people are heading to Lisbon’s suburbs to settle down, find a second home, or acquire an investment property.

Five minutes from the Costa da Caparica beach, Quinta do Pinhão is a complex of luxury apartments priced from as little as 2,562eur per m2. This project is only 20 minutes from central Lisbon yet is surrounded by nature and a stone’s-throw away from shops and beachfront restaurants. See Quinta do Pinhão.
