The Algarve is a stand-out destination for witnessing this sublime natural phenomenon, with a number of scenic spots offering sweeping views of the Atlantic.

A beautiful sunrise or sunset can make your holiday on the Algarve coast one to remember. Equally, those that are lucky enough to own a home of their own in this gorgeous coastal region would be missing a trick if they didn’t take advantage of its prime sunset locations.

We look at renowned viewpoints and tucked-away Algarve bays that are worth a visit at dusk or dawn.

Ria Formosa

In the Ria Formosa Lagoon and Nature Park, you’ll discover an endless number of tranquil locations to watch the sun go down whilst surrounded by natural beauty. The Ria Formosa takes you on a journey through the boroughs of Loulé, Faro, Olhão, Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António. Navigate your way through a labyrinth of canals, marshes and barrier islands, and you might just find a secret spot of your own. You can also visit a group of five nearby islands—Barreta, Culatra, Armona, Tavira, and Cabanas—which are accessible via a local boat service and are bound to offer fantastic views.

Cacela Velha, Vila Real de Santo António

Cacela Velha is a small coastal town that sits in front of the Ria Formosa. As well as looking out to sea, Cacela Velha is also the perfect place to watch the sun go down on the vast expanses of the Eastern Algarve.

Pilgrims on the famous eastern route of Portuguese Way of St. James pass through Vila Real de Santo António, often stopping to see the orange hues that streak across the horizon.

Cacela Velha is as popular with locals as it is with tourists and is definitely worth a visit.

Ponta da Piedade, Lagos

One of the more popular locations on our list, Ponta da Piedade is renowned for its spectacular views of sunsets in the Algarve. Visitors across Portugal’s Southern coast make the trip to Lagos to watch the sun rise and set against a backdrop of crystalline waters and breath-taking rock formations.

Praia da Albandeira, Porches

Best known for its natural rock arch, this is another great location to observe the sun going down against striking golden cliffs. It is a small and secluded beach, not far from the hill town of Lagoa and the stunning Armação de Pêra resort. If you’re looking for a quieter place to watch the sunset, where waves crash in and out of secluded coves, Praia da Albandeira is the one for you.

Cape St. Vincent, Sagres

Situated at the most southwestern tip of Portugal and mainland Europe, Cape St. Vincent offers unparalleled views stretching out into the Atlantic. You can get a 10-minute bus from the nearby town of Sagres, which is regarded as one of the most remote but finest regions of Portugal and is a prime destination for pro surfers. Look out for the lighthouse on this rugged headland, where visitors gather to experience one of the most beautiful sunsets in the Algarve.
