Nazaré, Portugal, holds the record for the biggest surfed wave ever recorded. This seaside town on the westernmost point of Europe is home to the largest waves in the world.

Two years ago, German Pro surfer, Sebastian Steudtner, broke a Guinness World Record riding an 86-feet-high wave in Nazaré, Portugal.

Crowds of surging enthusiasts gasped as Steudtner glided through this colossal wave for a period of 25 seconds, breaking the Guinness World Record for the World’s Largest Surfed Wave.

His achievement was officially announced on 24 of May 2022 at the famous lighthouse that overlooks Praia do Norte, Nazaré.

In 2018, Steudtner was also recorded surfing a wave at Nazaré that has been estimated at 115-feet tall. This mesmerising video, posted on YouTube by the World Surf League, racked up 4.7 million views and continues to resurface to this day.

The world’s largest waves break at Nazaré

Praia de Norte, Nazaré, is home to the world’s largest waves. This is largely due to the Nazaré Canyon, a submarine canyon that extends 16,00 feet below the ocean’s surface. There are few people in the world that can surf the waves at Praia de Norte.

That said, it isn’t uncommon for records to be broken in this fascinating seaside town, where unique weather and ocean conditions create the some of the world’s greatest surf breaks.

Six records had been broken by the time Sebastian Steudtner made the Guinness World Records in 2020 for the biggest surfed wave ever recorded.

Maya Gabeira, Brazilian surfer and Steudtner’s big wave partner, holds the title of Largest Wave Surfed (Female) at 73.5 ft. Gabeira’s wave was also the biggest surfed by anyone during the 2019-20 winter season.

The surf capital of the world

Around an hour’s drive south of Nazaré is the town of Peniche, another major surfing destination. This rocky peninsula is well known for its monumental waves and supreme surfing conditions. Like Nazaré, Peniche sits on the westernmost point of Europe, jutting out into the North Atlantic. Surfers from across the globe journey to its famous Supertubos beach, which hosts Rip Curl Pro Portugal—the world’s most prestigious surfing competition.
